Not sure if you have heard but I got laid off from my job recently. This has been a new experience for me. Losing a job makes a person feel a lot of things. Sadness, hurt, lack of self-worth, the wondering ‘will I ever land on my feet?’ etc.
I was always open and honest on-air at Go about my mental health and depression issues and I want to keep that conversation going on this site. It is rough at times, I am not gonna lie.
I am not sure if you are keeping up on the news at all but it appears I am not the only one going through this unemployment journey. This isn’t meant to be a ‘look at all this great stuff I am doing!’ article. I just know a lot of us are going through the same thing right now and I am a firm believer in the motto ‘we are all in this together.’ This might even be helpful for anyone battling mental health issues in the time of COVID.
Here are some things I have been doing to help me stay positive.
Working Out/Eating Better – Remember hearing those stories about how Michael Phelps would eat like 20,000 calories a day because he was training for the Olympics? I was the exact same way – minus the training for the Olympics part. The stress of doing morning radio and odd hours had me justifying cooking a frozen pizza at 5am in the Glen Perkins Super Pizza Oven 3000.
One thing I have known about my anxiety is that exercise and the endorphins that come with it help a lot. I got a Couch to 10K app on my phone and have started running about four days a week. The app tracks your progress and has guided runs for you to follow. The runs have helped immensely. I am not exactly Steve Prefontaine with my run times but I am getting there.
Eating better has also been huge. I am a smoothie guy now. Who knew?! Don’t get me wrong, I still get those wings going, but meal prepping and eating healthier has helped a ton. I have actually managed to drop some pounds during unemployment.
Routine – Sticking to a routine has been key for me. A few well-intentioned friends have reached out and said things like “FUNEMPLOYMENT! STAY UP LATE! GO WILD!” While yes, that sounds like fun, I know that would only be a temporary fix. I have been sticking to a regular bedtime and getting sleep. I still wake up early as hell because that’s how my brain is wired, but getting good sleep has been so helpful.
Reading – Reading is incredibly comforting, right?! I have been devouring nonfiction books like it is my job, since, ya know, I don’t have one of those right now. Here are some things I have read recently that I loved.

The Price is Right – It is on at 10am every morning. It is always there for you. Sure, the crowd shots might give you COVID-anxiety but they do Plinko like twice a week these days.
